How to fill your IT SIWES Logbook for Industrial Training (A guide for Nigerian Undergraduates)
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme
SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve
the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in
industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary
for a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords
students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and
exposed to the needed experience in handling machinery and equipment which are
usually not available in the educational institutions.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary
pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific
disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in
accordance with the education policy of government.
Operators - The ITF, the coordinating agencies
(NUC, NCCE, NBTE), employers of labour and the institutions.
Funding - The Federal Government of Nigeria
Beneficiaries - Undergraduate students of the following: Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Environmental, Science, Education, Medical Science and Pure and Applied Sciences.
Duration - Four months for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, and Six months for the Universities.

What is the SIWES Log Book?
The log book is more of a memo booklet that a SIWES student must be in possession of to easily record the daily experience and happening as he or she is on the SIWES programme. The Log book as well contains basic data about the student, and also the company or place the student must have been attached to inorder to carry out the SIWES programme.
Nevertheless students on SIWES industrial training always have difficulties in filling the appropriate data into the Log book, that is why i came up with this post to help out.
Below are pictures and explanation that clearly shows how to fill the Log book.
Note:- The Log book varies across institutions and school. i.e it is not the same in every school.
The students particular Page
The students particular Page
This is usually the the first page of your logbook. This page contains your full name (Name of student), your
institution name(e.g university, college of education, polytechnic or any tetiarry institution where you are studying), the course of study(ie, the course you are studying e.g computer science), year of the course(ie you current level in school as an IT student usually a year before your final year e.g
300Level), the company/establishment attached to (ie the name of the company where you are doing your Industrial training e.g Electronics Development Institute (ELDI)),
the name of your industry based SIWES cordinator (i.e the person your
report to on your training, or the person attached to you to aid you on
your SIWES programme), then finally your Registration/Matriculation
number, with a copy of your recent passport attached.
This page is usually the first page you fill immediately you get attached at the company or firm of your choice.
The Organizational Profile Page
This is the second page of your logbook. This page still contains the name of establishment/company you are
attached to, the location of the company/establishement (ie the
address of the company), then the productions/jobs undertaken/number of employees.
You can see as described with the above example.
The Organizational chart page
This page comes immediately after the organization profile page. Here, you are expected to draw the hierarchical structure or diagram of the organisation you are in; stating the different offices and establishing relationships between different offices as well as showing their connections using blocks and arrows indicating the direction. The organisation chart is expected to start with the head of the firm(CEO or Director) down to the least staff.
The Attendance Register
This is a register that is filled by the employer usually on a weekly base. This page mainly contains the SIWES students attendance
registry, and it meant to be completed and entered by the person you
report to in your company every week (Your H.O.D, CEO or any staff that is in charge of your IT program in the firm you work in). it has a format of X/Y, where X -
is the total number of days attended and Y - is the total number of work
days of your company. it also have provision for your industry base
supervisor to lay an overall comment about you and as well sign and
stamp it.
The Industrial Training Assessment Sheet
(End Of Programme Evaluation)
This page is supposed to be filled at the end of your IT program by your industry-based supervisor. This page contains the period (ie the time from and to the time the SIWES programme is meant to elapse), the name of the SIWES student, department(s) in which the SIWES student was in during the SIWES programme,
the name of the company attached to, the type of business the company
does, then finally the performance rating which is meant to be completed
by your instructor at your comapny (ie the person attached to you). It is meant to be signed and stamped as well.
The main Pages of the Logbook
The above images shows a practical example of the main body of the the Log book, where the students record the daily experiences gained and activities performed as he or she carries out the SIWES IT programme.
This is done by writing a brief summary of what you did on that
particular day in the space provided, and also attach the date of that
day as well. It also has area to add illustration(i.e diagrams), i will
advice you to draw diagrams if any with pencils and also try your
possible best to make it neat. At times there might not be diagrams to
draw, in the diagram provided space one can still add write ups as
clearly shown above. Finally, below it is a section for your signature
and date of that week, and also a comment section for your instructor,
his or her signature and date of signature and possibly stamping (if any available by the firm). Some of the images above has some weeks with diagrams while some have some weeks with extra description of the weeks activities.
I hope this is of help to you as you go trough it...
